Todays Naturally Fierce Feature: @thesassynation

My name is Talia, and I’m originally from Oakland, Ca., but I live in Atlanta, Ga now.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural since 2005, and I started wearing my hair curly and learning how to take care of it in 2009.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

Going natural was not something that I planned to do as part of an elaborate lifestyle change and I did not big chop. My stylist convinced me that getting relaxers was unnecessary just to wear my hair straight. So I agreed to let her help me grow it out, not having a clue about what “transitioning” meant. That was late 2005.

My appreciation of my natural curls and the process of figuring out how to rock them, on the other hand, grew out of a single conversation about hair my first summer in grad school. Looking back, I now realize that what seemed like small changes gradually snowballed into a whole lifestyle shift for me.
