So, about all this rain on the east coast…  I’m just not that into it. I’m thinking it’s about time to head back to the west for a bit. Every day I wake up and try to to figure out a new way to tie my headwrap to protect my hair (which is currently straight) from all this rachet moisture. This snake print scarf is one of my faves but I have at least twenty other scarves I could use, if only I can find and dig them out of my storage. #TheStruggle!

Until then… I’ll be documenting my efforts here and on IG @TheSassyNation. Stop by and let me know how I’m doing! At least my silk press is still poppin’! Ayyyye!!! Here’s a tutorial I did a while back on one of my favorite scarf tying styles… check the technique!

Sassy Hair

It’s been about a week since I wanded my hair for the V-Day, ‘Sexy is the New Sassy’ video series. I’ve been feeling really adventurous lately, so I decided to go ahead and get real crazy with some temporary spray-in color. I’ve been wanting to dye my hair forever, but I’m way too much of a coward. I had hi-lights once. And while they were beautiful, they really badly damaged my hair. So, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try something new without the commitment or the scary chemical damage. The color is Ruthless Red from Beyond The Zone.

After dry twisting my hair I let it set for about an hour or so then unraveled it and sprayed in the color. I found the color a little difficult to work with because it was getting everywhere (I mean, it is an aerosol). The transfer from my hair onto my clothes, jacket and hands was pretty substantial, even after my hair was dry. I’d definitely recommend waiting until the color is completely dried in before getting dressed and maybe opting for wearing darker colors if the hair is down like mines is in the last pic.

Although it turned out red, before drying it looked more pink to me, which thankfully darkened into red, then eventually burgundy (the last few days). The upside was that the color absorbs into the hair fast and getting it off of my clothes and surfaces was very easy. All in all I enjoyed my flaming red hair and would most likely try the spray-in color again. I’m thinking gray next time! Tell me what you think of this look and if you’ve tried temporary colors in your hair before.

Stop a bad hair day before it starts… check out:

As a result of my naturally curly, textured hair, frizz and I have come to know each other fairly well. In the beginning of my journey to wear my hair curly every day, like a jilted lover, frizz kept showing up uninvited and making a fuss on every possible occasion.

These days I have come to respect frizz now that I understand how to handle it. Instead of shunning it, I accept that it’s a natural characteristic of my hair type that I can rely on when I want some va-va-voom volume without looking like I’ve been attacked by a flock of birds looking for a nest. Most days, my curls repay me by behaving the way that I want them to: with moderate control. Organized chaos, if you will.

So here are a few dos and don’ts that I’ve learned that will help you to stay on the path to frizz-freedom:

DO make sure to deep-condition regularly. I cannot overstate the importance of well-moisturized and nourished hair. I like Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque and Macadamia Deep Repair Masque.

DON’T use hair products that contain humectants in the first five ingredients when the dew point in the atmosphere is high (I’ll get more science-y on this in a bit — sit tight). The most common humectants are glycerin, panthenol/provitamin B5, propylene glycol and honey. If your hair is straight and you want it to stay that way, it’s probably best that you avoid humectants at all costs.

Fresh face, fresh nails, fresh cowash. Still got that @lovinmytextures in for now.

Last week’s wet #curls were elongated, but behaved rather normally (looked thicker b/c of slightly more frizz than curl at the top and shinier, initially). I used a lot of gel last week after taking down my updo to avoid having to re-wet my hair in the shower (lazy).

However, For the most part everything looks almost the same as before I used the Beautiful Textures TMS product. My curls are 90% air-dried in this photo and only slightly more elongated than usual—especially at the top, still frizzier than normal. I don’t mind the extra frizz, however, because I like the volume it gives my fine hair. Plus, my curls are typically more loose up there anyway. No holding agent was used today, just leave-in and Camille Rose’s Almond Jai Twisting Butter.

Still haven’t used sulphates and…

✅ curls are in mostly tact
✅ moisture retention is a go

Thinking I might just ride this TMS thing out. I’m two washes in on week 4. No plans to straighten again, but stay tuned for a full video review…

In the meantime here is what I used to cleanse today:

Keep it sassy,

Tea
